Starting the day with a headache is never a good sign, but it's been happening to you more frequently. Sometimes the headaches go away, but on the days they get progressively worse, you find it hard to focus and complete your tasks at work. An occlusal guard may be the solution you need and Dr. Suchi Chalasani can help!

What is an Occlusal Guard?

Also known as a mouth guard, an occlusal guard is a custom removable appliance designed much like a retainer to protect your teeth. We make this appliance with impressions taken of your teeth, so it's customized to fit your mouth. It's comfortable to wear at night while you sleep, and it can be used to protect against issues such as clenching and grinding your teeth (bruxism), headaches, and TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) issues.

Bruxism and TMJ

When you suffer from bruxism, it can cause a host of issues such as:

  • Chipping and fractures
  • Excessive wear
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Jaw pain or tenderness

Bruxism and TMJ problems often go hand in hand and can be related. If you suffer from TMJ, you may experience facial pain, issues with your jaw locking in an open or closed position, and pain in your neck or shoulders.

An occlusal guard helps protect your teeth from the damage of clenching and grinding, and it also can help to relax the muscles in your jaw, which alleviates headaches.
