Optimum Brushing Techniques

Did you know that how you brush your teeth is just as important as how often you brush? Most of us understand that we should be brushing at least twice per day; however, are you using proper brushing techniques? If not, you may not be successfully removing all of your plaque build-up, or you could be causing damage to your gum tissue. Your Royal Oak dentist has some tips for achieving optimum brushing techniques.

Implement Proper Brushing

You'll want to hold your brush at a 45-degree angle and use gentle circular motions. You should be brushing for at least two minutes, and be sure to brush both the inside and outside chewing surfaces. Take your time and be careful not to brush too vigorously, as you can injure your gum tissue and cause recession.

Brush Your Tongue

Did you know that plaque and bacteria can actually build up on your tongue? For this reason, it's important to take a few minutes to brush your tongue. As a bonus, cleaning your tongue also promotes fresh breath.

Invest in an Electric Brush

Many patients have great success in brushing with an electric toothbrush. It essentially does all of the brushing work for you, and it's gentle enough not to harm your gums. It also has a timer to ensure that you're brushing for at least two minutes. Hygienists report improved home care and less plaque build-up for patients that choose an electric brush.

Don't Forget to Floss

It may not seem like such a big deal to skip the flossing, but did you know that you can actually get cavities in between your teeth? Flossing helps to remove plaque build up from in between your teeth, and helps strengthen gum tissue. You'll also notice that you have better breath when you floss your teeth.
